Re-Space-ing Place: “Place” and “Space” Ten Years On
– Media Space –
- EXAMPLE: Put a camera in an office.
- The camera can be positioned (same with the audio) in a way that allows the person with the camera to control how much privacy / not
- Everything that he/she is doing can be available to other people on the web. (Example from 1996).
- Blue City in a Red State
- “Green”
To understand space and place allows you to conceptualize an environment. Once you understand an environment, you can begin to relate that environment to technology.
Originally in CSCW, Space and Place was a hot topic because of this idea of a Media Space. This is something of a precursor to a virtual world.
Space
- 3-D
- Walls / Windows / Floor / Windows
- Top / Bottom / Right / Left
- Common Orientation
- Allows a place to occur
- Can be given meaning to
- Abstract / General / Global
- In-human Qualities
- Objective
Dourish Defines Space in the Article -
- Relational Orientation (Up / Down / Left / Right / Top / Bottom)
- Proximity and Action (You do things based on how close they are to you)
- Partitioning (Distance from the artifact)
- Presence and Awareness (People are aware of their surroundings and the space that their in, and they act differnetly based on what’s around them.)
Place
- A “house” vs. A “home”
- Place frames appropriate behaviors
- Can have cultural significance
Space, is what it is. Place, is how its used. Do you agree?
- This focuses on the human side, the user.
- What about memories?
- What if it isn’t used?
- Temoporality
Can you have a place, without the space?
MUDs vs. Second Life / World of Warcraft
A MUD is not a virtual space. The concreteness of the space in a MUD is not nearly the same as Second Life, or World of Warcraft. There are certainly situations where a MUD is so well defined / laid out / described that is “can have space.” But, in general, a MUD is a place, not a space and WoW and Second Life are both Space / Place.
